SameSide is a Denver-based organization that makes grassroots political action available through music, culinary arts and cultural events. On Sunday, May 20, SameSide hosts Harvey Milk Boozy Brunch at there… to support LGBTQ+ rights, and Denver for DACA dinner at Cerveceria Colorado on Wednesday, May 30.
The organization creates experiences for like-minded individuals to discuss pertinent social issues. During dinners, discos, brunches, cocktail hours and yoga classes, participants have the opportunity to be advocates for civil liberties, immigration and criminal justice reform, federal legalization of cannabis, gun control and the environment.
David Legacki and Nicole àBeckett, co-founders and brother-sister duo, made the decision to create SameSide after hearing countless friends say, “I want to do more to get involved but I don’t know how.”
“We want to inspire people to ‘get up and do something,'” says àBeckett. “Big, small, close to home or across the country…just find something that excites you and do it. Marching in a rally or making a donation aren’t the only ways to make a difference.”
Legacki and àBeckett began by rallying 10 people to phone bank during Sara Hernandez’s campaign for California’s 34th Congressional District in Los Angeles in the spring of 2017. The successful gathering is responsible for more than 700 calls before the group bonded over a craft brewery crawl around Los Angeles’ downtown arts district. From there, Legacki and àBeckett says that they “knew they had to grow this idea into a real business.”
Currently, SameSide has a presence in Denver, Los Angeles, and Asheville, North Carolina.
“Each of us has the potential to be a great activist—we’re just making it easier and more accessible,” says Legacki.
