On Thursday, July 19, RMFR returns to the studio with Live & Local on FOX21 News in Colorado Springs, Colorado, alongside host, Lauren McDonald, and president of Craft Cocktail Inc., Montana Horsfall. We share some of our favorite tiki drinks from contributing local establishments and mix up six refreshing and robust Polynesian-inspired cocktails. “Caipirinha”
~Taste Brazil’s national cocktail.
- 2 oz Avua Prata Cachaça (Brazilian rum)
- .25 lime juice or muddle half a lime, cut into quarters
- .5 oz demerara sugar simple syrup
Combine all the ingredients, roll in a shaker (a slow rowing-like motion) and serve in an “Old-Fashioned” glass over ice.
Axe and the Oak Distillery/Whiskey House
“Dead Man Walking”
~A riff on the original tiki drink, a “Zombie.”
- .5 cinnamon simple syrup
- .5 lime
- 2 dashes of Peychaud’s Bitters
- .5 Axe & the Oak bourbon
- .5 oz Drambuie
- 1 oz Falernum
- 1 oz Hillshine
Combine all the ingredients, shake and serve in a high-ball glass with/without ice.
“The Saturn”
~A famous gin-based tiki concoction.
- 1.25 oz Lee Spirits Co. Dry Gin
- .75 oz Lee Spirits Co. Forbidden Fruit Liqueur
- .5 oz lemon
- .5 oz Orgeat
Combine all the ingredients, shake and serve in a coupe glass.
“Hey Shuga!”
~A shout-out to the neighborhood restaurant/bar, Shuga’s.
- 2oz Plantation Rum
- 1 oz pineapple juice
- .25 oz lemon
- .75 brown sugar simple syrup
- 4 blackberries
Muddle the blackberries in a glass and then pour the fruit and the remaining ingredients into a shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a coupe glass.
“Gibson’s Archipelago”
~The name for this scrumptious cocktail is derived from the William Gibson novel “Neuromancer.”
- .5oz white rum
- .5 oz lime
- .75 oz Falernum (“Barbados in a glass”)
- .5 oz lime
- 1 oz pineapple juice
- 1 oz pomegranate juice
- kiwi garnish
Combine all the ingredients, shake and serve.
“Jungle Bird”
~A classic combination of traditional tiki flavors in a festive, inexpensive glass from Arc Thrift Stores.
- 1.5 oz Avua Prata Cachaça
- .75 Campari
- 1.5 oz pineapple juice
- .5 oz lime
- .75 simple syrup (Bring 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a boil, stirring constantly until combined.)
- pineapple wedge and mint garnish
Combine all the ingredients, shake and serve.
