On Saturday, April 13, RMFR had the opportunity to sip on the strong stuff at the Barrel-Aged Beers & Whiskey Festival, inside the eclectic space, Number 38 in Denver, with specialty brews and grade-A spirits all derived from right here in Colorado. The functional facility, located in RiNo, makes for both an intimate and inviting experience while still being accommodating and airy for the plethora of patrons there to taste the sought-after liquids, made even better by time well spent inside a collective unit of wooden staves.

Let’s recap some of our favorite sips of the day and recreate our very peaty party through imagery courtesy of Explore with Media.

We put our best foot forward with initial stops at the award-winning, Colorado Springs based, Distillery 291, to grab a pull of the “World’s Best Rye,” followed by a moonshine Arnold Palmer from the People’s Choice winner, 3 Hundred Days of Shine from Monument, Colorado.

That’s one handsome cowboy. And the whiskey ain’t bad either.
Mike Girard, owner of 3 Hundred Days of Shine passes out his punch.

We stay in our neck of the woods (er, mountains) and trot over to Axe & the Oak Distillery, only to be blown away by their deliciously clear take, moonshine aged in smoky Laphroaig barrels.

A yin & yang spirit. We are obsessed with the redefined moonshine at the Axe & the Oak Distillery.
Thirsty peeps abound.

The Intrepid Sojourner Beer Project always comes to play and we love the subtle combination of sweet, savory and slightly tart notes they exude in their Blueberry Lemon Thyme. We go onward to find the mixed culture red wine barrel aged guava saison from 14er Brewing Company, which we hit up, as many times as they’ll let us, throughout the fest.

We finish up with our version of the perfect dessert, a variation of the award-winning Belgian cherry ale from Strange Craft Brewing Company, a mixed fermentation aged in port and red wine barrels.

Stellar.

Here’s lookin’ at you (21 & up) kids.

Girls (and guys) gotta eat, and we do that too, with multiple food trucks to choose from on site. We take a brief pause for sustenance at Bits & Pieces Con Cerveza, ordering up their chicken Tinga, a hearty serving of chipotle chicken, peppers, onions, cucumbers, chipotle aioli, salsa negra, pickled red onions, cilantro, cotija and chorizo for $12.

You know we got the t-shirt.

What do you know about the cask strength rum from Bear Creek Distillery? Because you definitely should. This versatile spirit is something we recommend every good bar has on hand for it’s ability to harness the sweetness of cane sugar and the bold characteristics of bourbon.

Plus, jump on the opportunity to taste anything and everything from Deerhammer Distilling Company out of Buena Vista, Colorado, and add-on the Boulder Ginskey from Vapor Distillery while you’re at it.

Write that down.

Deerhammer delivers a robust 100-percent corn based whiskey with Rough & Tumble.

Boulder Ginsky for the lady? She consents.

Feeling like you missed out on that wonderful whiskey ride? Check again.
